Nintendo has created a huge surplus of the 3DS console and people were wondering why; so, Nintendo responded about their worries for Nintendo. Usually when a console from any company releases, there is a huge shortage of them quickly, which creates a huge demand for a product that doesn't exist.
When there is a high demand for something but a little supply, they can charge almost whatever they want for them. So this is the reason for most console makers decisions of having shortages, but Nintendo decided to release more than there was a demand for (a surplus).
Nintendo said that the reason they did this is because they were tired of having their customers trying to buy their console only to figure out that there were none left; this happened many times with the Wii, when it used to sell well (now the successor to the Wii, which has better hardware than the PS3 and 360, is coming...).
I might get a 3DS, but I'm not all that interested; I don't see the addition of 3D as a game changer in any way. If anything, the 3D will slow down the games I play and make them less enjoyable, while also hurting my eyes. I might rather get the NGP coming from Sony, which is basically a handheld PS3, when it comes to hardware.
So, if you want a 3DS, there are plenty of them.
